Leeds Development Education Centre is an educational charity which has been raising awareness of global sustainable development issues with people in West Yorkshire for over 30 years.

We are the leading provider of global learning services in West Yorkshire with one of the biggest selections of citizenship resources on topics such as fair trade, human rights, sustainability and social justice.

Our hands on, engaging workshops on Fairtrade and other topical global development issues are differentiated for all Key Stages.

This workshop uses case studies of local as well as famous people around the world who have taken action to improve the world we live in. It uses film, art and the Global Advocate exhibition to engage the children with the issues. Perfect for stimulating discussion on active citizenship, racial equality, fair trade and makes a great addition to Black History Month. This creative workshop challenges pupils to create floating gardens, making use of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills. The workshop demonstrates how small, innovative solutions can make big differences to the lives of those affected by our changing climate.

FIFA Fever!

In this popular workshop, pupils work together in small groups to earn resources for their ‘village’. Role-playing as football stitchers, pupils love this fast-paced game as they try to beat the banker! Through engaging debate, critical thinking, and personal reflection, pupils have the opportunity to recognise their own power to make positive change in the world. This workshop also utilises inspiring video footage of real football stitchers. 

Beyond Chembakolli

Want some inspiration in presenting modern, urban India in a child friendly way? This popular workshop uses photos and video shot by LDEC staff and includes their personal stories of visiting India. The videos contain interviews with children from a range of different backgrounds living in Mumbai, which relate to children's own experiences in the UK. The session culminates by creating a beautiful Indian icon from re-used materials.

Be a Cocoa Farmer

This workshop, created in collaboration with the makers of Dubble Bar, uses imaginative props to teach students about the life of Cocoa farmers in Ghana, how the cocoa bean is produced, transported and processed, and how buying Fairtrade chocolate makes a difference to small scale farmers in poorer countries. The workshop uses engaging props, role play and art to enable the children to empathise with cocoa farmers and understand the journey from Bean to Bar. 

Cotton onto Fairtrade

This fun and engaging workshop uses the creation of sock puppets to teach students about the journey of cotton, the benefits of Fairtrade and the lives of the people involved in the supply chain. Children build their confidence, creativity and presentation skills by presenting their cotton character to the rest of the class.

Lively and engaging workshop explores issues of child labour, conflict and the fate of gorillas in the Congo as a consequence of coltan mining. It uses film and creative activities to focus on sustainable development and global citizenship, and provokes debate about the consequences of our lust for the latest handset!
