Yellow Earth offer a variety of schools workshops using Chinese and East Asian art forms such as Beijing Opera, paper cutting, origami, shadow puppetry, Balinese masks and storytelling. These art forms are introduced in an accessible and fun way by experienced workshop leaders, creating a unique learning experience. Popular workshops include:

Storytelling – The Nightingale – A specially designed interactive storytelling workshop based on the beautiful story of The Nightingale. Set in China when the Emperor still ruled, the story takes place on the eve of New Year with all its accompanying traditions.

Shadow Puppets – Lights, Screens and Magic – This workshop introduces the ancient art of Chinese Shadow Puppets and paper cutting. The children make their own shadow puppets and paper cuts and perform with them in a traditional Chinese tale behind the screen.

Beijing Opera – A practical introduction to the principles of this unique form of traditional Chinese theatre and a chance to explore how some of these key elements can be used in the students own drama work.

Balinese Masks – Using the half masks of the Balinese Topeng, students will be introduced to this ancient and revered art form and have a chance to create their own contemporary characters.

We also offer Chinese Dance and Music workshops, Calligraphy and Origami. Yellow Earth have worked in partnership with community groups, schools, colleges, drama schools and heritage organisations and are always looking to work in partnership with schools to create a programme to suit you.
